What is Mahjong?
Mahjong is a timeless tile game that blends strategy, skill, and social connection. Known for its beautiful tiles and lively table conversation, the game brings people together around the table. What is the goal of Mahjong?
The goal of American Mahjong is to be the first player to complete a winning hand using 14 tiles that match one of the combinations on the current National Mah Jongg League card.
Do I need experience to join Mahjong 101?
No experience is needed. Mahjong 101 is designed for beginners and provides a welcoming introduction to the game. During the lesson you will learn the tiles, the Charleston, how to read the NMJL card, and the basic flow of gameplay.
What is Mahjong 102?
Mahjong 102 is a warm and supportive next step for players who have completed Mahjong 101 or know the basics. We review Mahjong 101 foundations while building confidence, improving gameplay flow, and helping players feel more comfortable at the table.

I’m nervous to try something new. Is Mahjong right for me?
Absolutely. Mahjong is a welcoming game for all ages and experience levels. You don’t need to be ‘good at games’ or know any rules before you arrive. In our beginner lessons, we move at a relaxed pace, explain everything step by step, and give you plenty of time to practice. Many players start out nervous and quickly discover that Mahjong is actually calming, social, and a lot of fun.
